Chadar Trek in Zanskar

Destinations Covered : Delhi - Leh - Chilling - Zaribago - Deepyokma - Nyrak Pulu - Lingshed - Nyrak Pulu - Tsomo Paldar - Tilat Do - Chilling – Leh

Day 01 : Arrival in Delhi
Stay in a hotel in Delhi. Full day at leisure or optionally you can go sightseeing of this historical city sprinkled with marvelous monuments.

Day 02 : Flight Delhi – Leh (3500 m)
On the first day of your Chadar Trek, you will be boarding an early morning airplane to Leh. Upon arrival you will be assisted in smooth transfer from Leh airport to your hotel. On the first day of your trekking trip in Ladakh, you will spend your entire day in Ladakh for acclimatization. Although there are many things to do in Leh town, it’s best that you spend your entire day at leisure allowing time for high altitude acclimatization.

Day 03 : In Leh Altitude: 3524 meters (11,562 ft.)
Today is the day for sightseeing. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy in Leh town. From shopping in Tibetan markets to visiting Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and Jama Masjid, you could explore this charming town entire day and interact with friendly locals. Today’s activity will give you a glimpse of the culture and tradition of Ladakh and also give you a hint as to why it is called Little Tibet.

Day 04 : Around Leh
Today you will visit the attractions (mostly manasteries) around Leh Town. Two stunning monasteries are located in the vicinity and should be included in every Ladakh trip itinerary. Visit to Shey Monastery and Thiksey Monastery are today’s sightseeing highlights.
Shey Monastery: Located 15 kms from Leh, Shey Monastery is nestled atop a hillock in Shey in. A 7.5 metres high gold plated Buddha Statue made up of copper is one of the highlight of Shey Monastery.
Thiksey Monastery: The impressive Thiksey Gompa is a sight to behold. Several stupas and exquisite wall paintings of Buddha adorn this monastery. Return to your hotel for stay overnight Leh.

Day 05 : Leh – Chilling (3200 meters) 3 hrs
After 2 days of acclimatization, you are all set to embark on the Chadar trek across the Zanskar River. We start the frozen river trek by drive to Chilling (3180 meters) from Leh. The road follows the serpentine Indus River up to the point of the confluence at Nimoo where Indus and Zanskar River meet. From here we will ride till our arrival in Chilling where we’ll either camp overnight or optionally stay in a Homestay.

Day 6 : Chilling - Zaribago (3250 meters) 5 hrs
Next few days are marked by trekking and stay in caves or camps along the way. In local language the caves are known as bawo and offer good shelter from chilly wind. The walk on the Chadar (ice sheet) over Zanskar frozen is a thrilling experience. You may also notice that at some places the chadar is formed only at the banks of the river and don’t be scared to get down on your knees or on belly at some section of the ice sheet.
Todays portion of Frozen River trek might take around 5 to 8 hours but this arduous journey is worth it. Upon arrival in Zaribago your overnight stay will be arranged in a cave or camps.

Day 7 : Zaribago - Deepyokma (3300 meters) 5 hrs
After early morning breakfast, your Chadar trekking trip continues. Walk on chadar and along it to arrive at Deepyokma being the final destination. At some places you might have to have along the trails depending on the thickness of ice sheet. Upon arrival, your overnight stay will be arranged either in camps or in caves.

Day 8 : Deepyokma - Nyrak Pulu (3400 meters)
Today we will begin early towards Nyrak Pulu. En route we will encounter magnificent sights of canyons. We will also come across the human settlements, one of the remotest in Ladakh region near Nyrak Pulu. Stay overnight in a camp or cave

Day 9 : Nyrak Pulu - Lingshed (3850 meters)
After a leisurely breakfast, we will leave for Lingshed which is only reached through trekking. You can visit the monastery in the area with overnight stay at homes of inhabitants.

Day 10 : Lingshed
Today is the high point of Chadar Trek over Zanskar River in Ladakh as you spend your entire day in Lingshed. This is also one of the most remote areas in Ladakh where human settlement could be found. We will also come across Buddhist monastery at Lingshed.
A Gelugpa Buddhist monastery, Lingshed Gompa is a key spiritual centre. There is also a school for monks (Jangchub Tensung Dorje Center) which was founded here by Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche to teach and spread Tibetan Buddhism.
Lingshed is entirely cut off from the world for 6 months. During summers trekking from Lamayuru and Padum could also be undertaken to reach Lingshed.
Your overnight stay will be either in a Homestay or in campsite.

Day 11 : Lingshed - Nyrak Pulu
Return journey to Leh begins today as we take a descent towards Nyrak Pulu. Your stay overnight will be in a camp or cave.

Day 12 : Nyrak Pulu - Tsomo Paldar (3300 meters)
We will continue our return journey by further descending towards Tsomo Paldar where we’ll make camp for overnight stay or else choose a cave.

Day 13 : Tsomo Paldar – Tilat Do (3200 meters)
It will take 7-8 hours to reach Tilat Do today hence we’ll break our camp early in the morning. In the night we’ll stay in a cave where dinner will be served before you retire to rest.

Day 14 : Tilat Do - Chilling - Leh
We’ll arrive in Chilling today after morning trek. Upon arrival we will board a private vehicle which will be waiting to take us to Leh town. Upon arrival in Leh, overnight stay is at a hotel.

Day 15 : Leh
To accommodate any unexpected delays due to weather or other unseen circumstances today is reserved for stay in Leh. Spend entire day at leisure, go shopping in local markets and buy souvenir as reminder of your memorable Chadar Trekking in Ladakh. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 16 : Leh – Delhi (Flight)
You will be assisted in smooth transport to Leh Airport from where you will board your flight back to Delhi. Upon arrival continue with your journey of ‘incredible India’ or board your flight back home from Delhi.
